Mentorship isn’t a side job. It’s central to sustaining our field.
After decades of designing across multiple genres, one of the most consistent throughlines in my career has been teaching and mentorship. Whether in formal classrooms or tech tables, post-show debriefs or coffee chats at LDI, the most meaningful growth — for students, collaborators, and even me — has always come from honest, curious, process-driven conversation.
As I’ve moved in and out of academia and met students and educators at USITT and LDI, I kept hearing the same thing: people are craving connection. Not just technical training or portfolio advice, but real conversation around process, purpose, and creative identity.
So Designing Stories isn’t just an educational offering. It’s a creative ecosystem — a place to sharpen your craft, dig deeper into your personal aesthetic, and learn to articulate your vision with confidence and clarity. A space where process is valued as much as product, and where community isn’t a buzzword. It’s the foundation.
If you’re looking to grow — not just as a technician or artist, but as a storyteller, a collaborator, and a leader — I hope you’ll join me.

What makes it different
Mentorship isn’t a side job. It’s how designers grow.
Designing Stories is a creative ecosystem — a place to sharpen your craft, dig deeper into your personal aesthetic, and learn to articulate your vision with confidence and clarity.
Process over product
Most programs teach tools. This one asks how you think, why you make the choices you make, and what you want your work to say.
Find your voice
Move from technical competence to creative clarity — so every project reflects a point of view, not just a skill set.
Real feedback
Direct, honest critique from a mentor with decades of design experience across theatre, live events, and beyond.
A community that gets it
Work alongside peers who are asking the same questions. Peer review, shared references, and conversations you can’t have alone.
Live intensive sessions
Four-day Zoom windows across the summer — small groups, real projects, paced so you can actually apply what you’re learning.
Self-guided track too
Not ready for live? The async track walks you through the same curriculum on your schedule, with drip-paced lessons and downloadable tools.
